I compose music for concerts, ensembles, orchestras, films, celebrations, festivals, education and many other. My preferred genres are classical and jazz, but I can also do pop, rock, RnB, gospel, etc. My music is fun, rhythmic, colourful, versatile and entertaining. I could compose some just for you.

About Me

James Ambrose Hendricks was born on the 14th May 1966 in Bellville, Western Cape Province, South Africa.  After matriculating, he completed his B.A. Mus , H.D.E. and B.A.Mus (Hons) in Composition at the University of the Western Cape. Later on he completed his M.Mus in Composition at the University of Cape Town under the tutelage of Peter Klatzow.

Hendricks’ music is melodic in character with a strong sense of rhythm. He makes use of tonal and modal devices and is strongly influenced by Jazz and Pop culture.

He compose music for festivals, concerts, celebrations, films, education,etc. His prefered genres are classical and jazz, but he is also capable of writing  pop, rock, gospel, and RnB .

How do I go about doing it?

For songs I need to be notified 6 months in advanced. For bigger works like  symphonies and ensemble pieces I need to be notified 12 months in advance. One would ask why so much time? – because I want to create good quality work.

Some recent commissions and requests include

  • In 2013 the special needs school at which I teach, percussion orchestra won a prize for the 20 best performances at the Western Cape Schools Arts And Culture Festival held at the Artscape with my original composition called “Cape Town Samba”.
  • In 2018 the same orchestra won R10 000 in their category at the Liberty Promenade Talent Competition with my arrangement for recorders, bass, piano and percussion of Roberta Flack’s song called “Where is the love.”
  • In 2019 the same orchestra won R10 000 again at the above-mentioned talent competition with my original composition arranged for recorders, piano, bass and percussion called “Save the Earth”.
  • In 2022 he helped Lentegeur School for LSEN win R5 000 at the Liberty Promenade Musical Showcase with the song “Just Kick The Ball”.
  • In 2023 he helped Lentegeur School for LSEN win R20 000 at the Promenade Musical Festival.
